HERB OHTA, JR.

“Throughout my own musical journey, I’ve been very fortunate to be able to play different ‘ukulele’s. From Sonny D, to G-String, and KoAloha.

My musical journey has come full circle…. I went back “home”….. My very first ‘ukulele was a special miniature Kamaka given to me by Sam Kamaka, Jr. soon after I was born. I always respected Kamaka, and respected the friendship between the Kamaka family and my father Ohta-San. Since performing and recording with a Kamaka ʻukulele, my respect and appreciation has grown. The quality, craftsmanship, tonality, playability, and their drive to build the best instruments has allowed me to musically express myself in the truest form.

2016 will mark Kamaka ʻUkuleleʻs 100th Anniversary and I am honored to be a very small part of their musical legacy.”
PROFILE
International recording artist Herb Ohta, Jr., is considered to be one of today’s most prolific `ukulele masters. Influenced by Jazz, R&B, Latin and Brazilian music, he puts his stamp on Hawaiian music by pushing the limits of tone and technique on this beautiful instrument.

The son of `ukulele legend "Ohta-san," he started playing at the age of three, and teaching at the age of nine. He now shares the music of Hawai‘i and the beauty of the ‘ukulele with people around the world, performing and conducting instructional workshops.

This multi Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award winner (Hawaiian equivalent to the Grammy) and four-time Hawai‘i Music Award winner effortlessly translates the beauty and culture of Hawai‘i through his creative expression of music. With eleven solo albums, twelve duet albums, contributions on more than 40 recordings, two instructional books with Grammy Award Winner Daniel Ho, and a songbook published in Korea, he is well on his way to matching his father’s legacy.

In 2015 Herb celebrated his 25th Anniversary in the music industry.
